Modifications to toileting techniques
Alternate positions when the basic four-step method does not work for you.
The basic four steps of emptying work for most people, but others need modifications to their toileting position. These conditions may call for changes:
- Past surgery that limits your back, hip, pelvic, knee, or ankle flexibility
- Constipation
- Pelvic organ surgery
Ideas your physical therapist may suggest
- Some people find it more comfortable to fully squat while perched above the toilet on the rim of the seat.
- Some people find it easier and more comfortable to slump backward while on the toilet.
- Some people hold their buttocks apart while sitting on the toilet. This stretches the muscles around the anus and anal canal and keeps them from tightening up during emptying.
Alternate positions for sitting on the toilet
- Raise your hips by putting a stool under your feet and sit more upright.
- Put a support behind your lower back.
