Traction

Traction applied to the neck or back may be used to reduce pain or muscle spasm.  The theory of traction is to decompress the intervertebral disc by separating the boney vertebrae, relieving pressure on the nerves and joints, in theory providing rehydration to the disc.  Though patients have subjectively noted improved symptoms of neck or back pain, the research is inconclusive; in conjunction with other treatments of soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, exercise, and stretching, some patients find traction beneficial.  We use this and other modalities as they are indicated to provide relief of symptoms.
