Iontophoresis

This modality uses an electric current to deliver a drug or chemical through the skin to the desired painful area.  For inflammatory conditions that occur close to the skin level, such as tendonitis and coccyx pain, a steroid is placed in a patch through which an electrical charge delivers the drug to the desired area.  This can avoid the need for a more invasive cortisone injection.  Other substances, such as acetic acid, delivered through iontophoresis have been known to reduce calcium deposits in bicep tendonitis or plantar fasciitis.
