Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain during pregnancy must first be evaluated by your physician.  Once more serious complications are ruled out, pelvic pain may be caused by the stretching of ligaments and muscles in the abdominal and pelvic floor region, causing pelvic joint instability and symptoms of pelvic pain.  Women who have had previous chronic pelvic pain conditions may find they are exacerbated by the increasing pressure of the growing baby against already tender and painful tissues, nerves, and abdominal organs.  Hormonal and circulatory changes also may play a role in pain sensitivity.

During the evaluation process, the physical therapist will evaluate the local muscles and ligaments to determine the cause of your pain.  Treatment may include: manual therapy, posture and body mechanics to reduce stress on the region, exercises, positioning for relief, pelvic supports and belts, relaxation and pain management techniques, and preparation for labor and delivery.
