Postsurgical Spine Care

Physical therapy and rehabilitation are vital components of recovery from back surgery.  Rehabilitation exercises provide balance and coordination that can help keep the spine in good condition, and speed recovery following the procedure.

Physical therapy after back surgery serves a number of purposes, from pain control to building strength, to supporting the back.

Initial treatment is directed toward helping the patient reduce their pain and begin to regain their strength.  Modalities such as heat, ice, cold laser, and electrical devices are used to reduce inflammation and muscular spasm.  Physical therapy teaches the patient movements that protect the spine while gaining flexibility and strength.

Exercise programs are developed on an individual basis, taking into account the scope of the surgery, physical condition of the patient, and the ultimate goals of the patient.
