Rectal Pain

Proctalgia fugax is defined as a sudden, severe pain in the anal area, that can last anywhere from several seconds to minutes, with 15 minutes being the typical cut-off, and occurs in the absence of any organic proctologic disease.  Proctalgia Fugax affects 14% of healthy adults (Thompson, 1981, Salvati, 1987 and Potter, 2001).  Surprisingly only 17 - 20 % of those affected by the condition report it to their physician.  This is thought to be a result of the sporadic nature of the condition.

Anismus is when the external anal sphincter and puborectalis muscle involuntarily contract during attempted passing of feces (defecation), therefore obstructing your anus and causing constipation.
