Prenatal Back and Neck Pain

Neck and back pain is not uncommon during pregnancy, but should not be considered normal.  Most often, pain occurs due to postural and hormonal changes which may cause new pain or exacerbate old injuries.

Physical therapy treatment will focus on manual therapy to restore movement and alignment, postural reeducation, good body mechanics to protect the spine, and specific exercises, safe during all stages of pregnancy, focusing on core muscles and flexibility.

Lumbar supports may be used to provide pain relief, and to support the weight of the growing baby.  You will also be instructed in the best positions and techniques for labor to protect your spine, if needed.
