Erectile Dysfunction

There are various causes of erectile dysfunction which need to be evaluated by your physician.  The nuerovascular supply to the penis is intricate and delicate, and can be injured by surgery or chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.  Medications and psychological issues may also have an effect on your function.  Erectile dysfuction due to vascular changes with the inability to obtain or sustain a full erection may be helped by physical therapy. Pelvic floor muscle reeducation can optimize pelvic floor muscle function.

The pelvic floor muscles play a role in sexual activity.  Contractions of the ischiocavernosus and bulbocavernosus muscles produce an increase in the intracavernous pressure, and influence penile rigidity.  The bulbocavernosus muscle compresses the deep dorsal vein of the penis to prevent the outflow of blood from an engorged penis.

Treatments for erectile dysfunction include electrical stimulation and pelvic floor biofeedback.
