Coccyx/Tailbone Pain

Tailbone pain or coccydynia may occur for various reasons.  A fall onto the coccyx may result in a fracture or just a joint sprain.  The pelvic floor muscles which attach to the coccyx may become tight or painful due to poor sitting posture, chronic lumbar pain/scoliosis, childbirth injury, or sacroiliac dysfunction.

Physical therapy treatment will include an evaluation of the low back and pelvic area to determine the source of your problem.  Treatments many include: manual therapy and joint mobilization, pelvic floor muscle reeducation, postural reeducation in sitting, use of cushions to help with sitting pain, self release/stretching program, and modalities for pain and inflammation.
